I guess I don't mind that John thinks the cap is only meant to keep the toothpaste within the plastic casing during shipping until he takes ownership of the fresh package and then casts the topper aside like so much wrapping paper no longer needed once the present has been opened.
He says he's forgetful.
This could explain why he leaves the kitchen drawers yawning wide when reaching for a cereal spoon. I'm pretty sure it's not because I need to work on my balance as I try to avoid a just discovered obstacle aiming for my hip as I round the corner.
He wanted cereal. It's understandable.
I'm willing to overlook the way he douses everything in hot sauce before asking if I wanted a taste, never once interpreting visual or audible cues such as "Can I have a bite?".
He likes his food spicy.
I will even cut short any temper when I see that he ignores obvious chores like switching out laundry and adding a dish to the waiting load, even swallow the urge to shout when I spy the single sock nestled right beside the almost empty hamper.
He's a lousy shot anyway. (Besides, I know the other sock is still safely on his left foot. Long story.)
I married him knowing all of this. I knew what I was getting into. I know that when he gets involved in a game, the entire world disappears beyond his office door and PM will become AM before he comes up for air. I know that when it comes to discipline, he will always choose the good cop, leaving me with the sloppy seconds of "Mean Mommy". I know that he will always fall asleep within the first five minutes of a chick flick whether or not he finds it interesting.
(We went to see "Love Actually" when it first came out. John started snoring softly almost immediately and woke up with two scenes left to go. As we walked out, he looked back at me and said, "That was a great movie!" I answered, "Which part? The beginning or the end?" He has since seen it many times in its entirety as we own it on DVD and watch it every holiday.)
But he knows me too.
He knows I invariably ruin the collared hems of my nightshirts with my teeth when I'm concentrating on writing a post, lost in my own world of words and thoughts.
It's a habit of mine.
He overlooks my almost obsession with checking the doors even after he swears he locked us in and locked would be burglars out.
It's more to appease my own neuroses than doubt his word.
He has learned to stop suggesting (with exasperation) that I cease watching shows like Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice when I complain about the writing or half baked story lines.
I think he likes my snark.
He's also extremely patient with the time I give to this site, yet forthcoming with a volunteering hand to keep Sprite happy and occupied so I may have some quiet interludes. (I'm looking forward to this Saturday and an entire day off.) (I won't last the morning before begging to be the third wheel in the "Daddy/Daughter Day". He'll know that too..)
Maybe this is why we live together so well, why we compliment each other so easily. Suddenly, those pet peeves become less annoying and more forgiving.
Or maybe we just don't annoy each other. Cuz I know it would sure as hell annoy everyone else.

Next week's Spin assignment: Love and Valentine's Day.
Aw, it doesn't take a tanking economy to keep Cupid away! Next Sunday marks the anniversary of the St. Valentine's massacre which evolved into a yearly tradition of exchanging hearts, chocolate, and cardstock in shades of red. Um, yeah. All I know is that I have a date on Thursday evening with my true love to watch my other true love perform live on stage. I don't care if the reason for the holiday stems from cows praying to the harvest moon. I'm joining in.
What do you think about Valentine's Day? Overplayed or under-appreciated? Should we go all out for one day versus the other 364 days we get to overlook each other? Should every day be Valentine's Day? (Hallmark's stock would go through the roof..)
Spin up your Valentine, seal it with a kiss, and bring it over by February 12th to join in on this love fest!
Will you be MY Valentine?
("I choo-choo-choose you!" - Quick! Which show is that line from?)

You guys are so sweet - my kind of annoying.
Hoping to jump back into the spin one day soon...

I love how you balance your pet peeves with ones that he might have about you - I would have thought to do that if my hubby actually read my blog...(evil grin!)
This is my absolute favorite part:
"Maybe this is why we live together so well, why we compliment each other so easily. Suddenly, those pet peeves become less annoying and more forgiving."
Well said! :)

The "Choo-choo-choose" line is from an episode of The Simpsons.
One of the reasons I just mentioned in passing about what Beloved does that irritates me (a list that was no way inclusive, of course) is because he could have turned around and eaten me for lunch. Yeah, it could have gotten ugly.
But may I just mention that Valentine's Day? Is in a "peeve" class all it's own. *sigh*

JR has some truly annoying habits. Not me I'm perfect. Or at least I tell him I am. Someday maybe, he'll believe me.

I love you guys; will you be my Valentine? Both of you, as a couple. No weird stuff, you're just too cute!!
Posted by: Maureen@IslandRoar | February 05, 2010 at 09:35 AM
A - SIMPSONS.
B - You and John are adorable. Hopefully someday I will find a guy who appreciates all my weirdness like J does with you :-)
I'll try to get my pet peeves post up tonight. Or if I have time on my lunch.

I LOVED this.

Great post. As I was thinking about what to write this week, I kept thinking about the annoying things I do. I love how you worked this!
Here's my spin:

In my realtionship, Matt is the clean freak germophobic pet peeve maniac while I am the sloppy, lazy (careless?) one. It works. I think?
Posted by: Maureen | February 05, 2010 at 10:38 AM
Really isn't that what makes it work, finding someone that annoys you the least, or who's quirks you can deal with? My spin is up.

Yup, what is it with guys and not closing kitchen cabinets and drawers? Don't they realize that silverware can get dusty, too??? Ewww.

If we all shared the same exact habits and pet peeves, our marriages would hardly be interesting, now would they? :)
Great post!

You and John sound like a match made in heaven...or at least a well-oiled marriage machine. Jeremy overlooks many, many things for me. You know what? I learned something awesome on Oprah today, from P!nk of all people! She said, before you identify 20 things you want in a mate, make sure you possess those same qualities. Well put, P!nk. I sort of love her now.
You're linked!
(can I say that to you on every Spin Cycle comment I make? It just makes me happy.)

I laughed and laughed when I read the part about checking the doors. Then I shook my head and sighed.

This is great! I dumped on my family in my spin...but who else would put up with me?!
Posted by: Suzicate | February 06, 2010 at 11:36 AM
Warren and I have a lot of differences too on things. . . and he is also patient with me when I devote too much time to my blog. I'm sure he'd like to watch a movie with me where I don't get up to do something in the middle of it and then get distracted and do something else and forget to finish watching it with him....that would be nice I think. :-)
