Pardon the shortness of this RTT. I am delirious with coughing and dizziness and cursing this horrid sinus infection that has snuck up and attacked me from behind. Unprovoked, I tell you. I have the Z Pack. I have the Musinex. I hate the Musinex since I don't like feeling like I have to do twenty million things at once, 10 million is okay, but twenty is overkill. But it works.
I am thanking my lucky stars (and yours as well) (I borrowed your stars, is that okay?) that the first storm to make contact with the US is coming nowhere near my area. I've weathered storms before, Andrew to name a biggie,(Can you name drop a storm? Cuz I just did!) and while they involve a lot of preparation, "hunkering down", and junk food, (Yes, every named storm has a clause where it is considered an automatic cheat day from the time you enter a Warning status to the moment you get your power back on. Calories do not count since you automatically burn them while worrying about that tree in your backyard which you're sure will not stand up to the winds especially considering the way it leans when your dog lifts his leg on it.) I somehow looked forward to them since they meant either A. no school or B. no work. It was almost a jovial high stress atmosphere. "Get those shutters out of the garage! Manual labor now! And by the way, I get to sleep in tomorrow since we'll probably lose power before dawn and the wind and rain will be mostly white noise! Now fetch me a beer and crank up the tunes, let's batten down this mother!" But since having Sprite? I'd rather not deal with the high winds, slashing rains, and high stress of not having a portable DVD player when there's nowhere to plug in and the child is looking to the dogs for her amusement which will turn the "Let's have fun in a black out!" situation into a gane of Canine Keep Away.
Yup, it's no longer about life or death. It's about child and entertainment. Which is life or death when she's screaming for Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and all you have to offer is your own somewhat pathetic Hot Dog Dance.
I have a new favorite Monday show, Accidentally on Purpose. Last night's show had me in fits of giggles which turned into fits of coughing thanks to the sinus infection, and then bouts of wheezing.. I think this show may be hazardous to my health..
What is that weird phenomenon that happens some time between childhood and adulthood that the foods we absolutely loathed as children are now some of our favorites? My mom used to make a tuna noodle casserole when I was a kid which we hated since we had it once a week. I can understand (now) how economical it was, a box of mac n cheese, a can of tuna, and a can of cream of mushroom soup. In fifteen minutes, you have dinner. Lee and I just grew tired of it. I made it for the first time a few years ago and LOVED it. Maybe it was the taste, or the nostalgia, but I liked it again. I made a meatloaf for the first time about a month ago since I was looking for a dish that would last through 2 or 3 meals, and John raved about it. So did I. Sprite cast a look at it, determined it was NOT sausage, (the only grayish brown meat she'll eat) (TURKEY sausage, people) (you were wondering...) and declined a taste. Fine, more for us. But back to my point. It was the same recipe my mom made when I was young, but I didn't remember it tasting so good. Kind of like broccoli. I hated it when I was a juvie, it would literally make me gag to swallow it. Now? I'll eat John's portion and Sprite's, although she does go stalk for stalk with me, she actually likes the green trees. Spinach? Same thing. I add it to everything when I used to only add it to my napkin to sneak it to the garbage.
Due to all the extra cleaning time I've had during the evenings, we've come to notice just how much crap we have in the house. Enough crap that I've been after John for over a year to have a garage sale, which we did this last Saturday. One of the items we decided to sell was a tricycle we had bought for Sprite back when she was 18 months or so. Since we brought it home, she looked at the trike with interest maybe ONCE. Since then, it's seen more dust than miles. Finally, I added it to the pile of junk stuff reserved for the sale. As soon as the signs were up, a man in a pick up truck pulled up and asked how much we wanted for the trike. When I found out his wife ran an at home daycare, I immediately offered it for donation, waving off his dollar bill. (The guy had bought a digital camera and tow straps, I had already fleeced his pockets enough.) A little later into the morning, John pulled out his own bike from the garage to play with one of the chains and Sprite immediately asked where her trike was. The same trike that was currently on its way to a new home. Throughout the rest of the morning, she asked about it, for it, of it. (A sonnet may have been composed. What can I say? She takes after me.)
I think she has Costco on speed dial for I walked into the store that afternoon to pick up some ground beef and stumbled upon a freaking Disney Princess bike with training wheels, perfect for a newly minted preschooler. Her Christmas/Hanukkah present is now sitting in our closet, the very closet where we recently cleared all the space and now had room to move around? Yeah, not so much anymore.
Okay, I think I can blame a majority of this post on the Musinex. No? At least the garage sale portion, I mean THAT rambled! Here, ramble on over to the woman who started it all, The Un Mom. Keely makes sense. At least I think she does. Hell, I understand it, so it's good enough for me..

it's funny how crappy food from childhood seems yumm when you're a grown up.. i know i experience that too with vegetables in general.. when i was a kid i had my gradma straining the soup for me.. no vegetables were allowed near my plate:P.. i hope our kids won't take after me in the food department;)
Happy Tuesday! Hope your sinus infection goes away soon!
*my RTT is up too:)

Feel better and I am giving you an award!

I hope you feel better soon! My most recent sinus infection lasted through 5 courses of antibiotics. I am finally getting rid of it. (I HOPE!!)
As for the food, my tastes haven't changed much. But that may be due to food allergies.

Tornadoes freak me out enough; I can't imagine living through a hurricane!
We totally need to have a garage sale! We have so much crap in our basement. It's not garage sale season here in the Midwest, though. It's too cold. I guess it's always garage sale season in FL! Unless there's a hurricane...

You obviously need a small generator whose sole purpose is to power the TV and DVD player in the event of power outages.

I always love your random! Feel better.

As a kid, I'd eat just about anything but asparagus and coffee. Two of my favorite things as an adult? You guessed it - asparagus and coffee.
The story about Sprite's trike made me LMAO. Welcome to the Great Parental Karma.

I was wondering about Musinex as well.
Have a wonderful RTT!

Hope the sinus thing gets better soon. I have one going on too. The sinus headache is the worst part!
I remember 13 yrs ago when I was expecting my 1st child I bought several baby things from a lady and her daughter was about 3 and freaking out I tell you over her mom selling anything.

My kids used to do that with old toys I'd want to get rid of too. It was all of a sudden their 'favoritist' toy and they could not, would not part with it.
I hope you feel better soon!

How the chapters of our lives change. First you're a lion, meeting the storm head on. Then you're a lioness, protecting your child from the storm. First we loathe certain foods, then we love them. First, we love to accumulate stuff, then we can't stand all our stuff and try to get rid of it.
Sorry all of this seesawing back and forth is making me woozy. Where's my musinex?

I can relate to the taste changing thing. Love chinese food now but as a kid it was just gross. Although there are still some foods from childhood that no amount of time cna make better--liver--but some theigs are good now. Hope you get better soon.

Oh, I want to see you do the "hot dog" dance. Hot diggety dog. We have ears, so let's cheer...

Hope you feel better. I have new favorite show this season too. Modern Family. It's a hoot.

Is that bike still in the box? If so, you are going to want to get a start on putting it together now. It will take at least until Christmas. You do get more days for Hanukkah, right?

You can definitely borrow my stars!
I hope you feel better soon.
And I've totally been making all my mom's receipes lately too. So good...

You are welcome to my stars. Especially if it keeps the storm away (I don't need them anyway, we don't get bad storms up here, just snow and more snow). Feel better soon! It is no fun being sick when you are a mom. The lying in bed watching bad TV days are totally gone. I hope Sprite enjoys the new bike.

You are definitely welcome to my stars. Maybe they'll help get rid of your sinus infection, too.
Princess Nagger does the same thing - barely notices something or even plays with it, but the moment it's gone, suddenly she's all about wanting to play with it. Sprite's going to have a VERY happy Hanukkah! ;)
Hope you feel better soon!

Kids have a 6th sense about their belongings. Throw something away, give something away or sell it, they will always ask for that item no matter how obscure it may be.
Hope your sinus infection clears up.
bad stuff that can happen
Hurricanes aren't so fun when you hve kids and you need to keep them entertained.
Posted by: Elle | November 10, 2009 at 07:05 PM
Gah! The hurricane hunker down is so accurate. We've weathered a couple with three kids, before number four made his appearance and it. was. hell. Just the lack of power and the sweating and the boredom. A nightmare. Hell yes I ate whatever I wanted that was prepacked and high in preservatives. Doesn't everyone?
Feel better. :)
And yard sales, ugh, I still have nightmares about those.

If you're that sick, you can blame it on anything you want to...hope you're feeling better. Love that you have presents hidden already.

A sinus infection AND a garage sale?? Methinks tho art Superwoman...
Feel better!
Posted by: Maureen@IslandRoar | November 10, 2009 at 08:38 PM
I don't even have children and I am terrified of black outs from those stupid hurricanes. Last year, with Ike, I became a major fatty/alcoholic....which was fun for about 4 days and then I thought I was going to die. THREE WEEKS WITH OUT POWER. UGH.
Posted by: Nel | November 10, 2009 at 10:09 PM
Man, I would have loved a weather-induced cheat day once, too. But yeah, entertaining a toddler without power? not so much.
Posted by: Keely | November 10, 2009 at 11:06 PM
Hunkering down! It just sounds so wrong. Anyway, feel better soon.
