Okay, so here's the deal. I didn't go to Prom.
I was single, not interested in cheering on the cheerleaders who had voted for themselves for Prom Queen, or sidestepping the jocks who were strong-arming each other to show their prowess. I loved to dance, but busting a move with a bunch of people I didn't plan on seeing ever again after the next month and paying fifty bucks a ticket to do it just didn't strike the right chord with me.
My sister and I were in the same grade for most of our school years, so for my parents, it was kind of like raising twins. Everything Lee went through with school, from trips to fees for clubs to graduation, I went through it at the same time. We pretty much had the same friends for the most part, joined the same clubs, etc. But when it came to Prom? Lee wanted to go. I didn't.
(That's me on the left. My older sister Lee on the right.)
I instead joined a group of friends who boycotted Prom and went out for dinner and fun, just hanging out and enjoying time with those I was sure to stay friends with.
Lee and her boyfriend glammed up for the night and went to Prom. Lee told me later that they had had a great time and took plenty of pictures, which are floating around in her photo albums somewhere.
(Since Lee's boyfriend could not give permission to post his picture, I'm just showing you Lee. She was a hottie, right? Still is..)
I have a small regret about not going to Prom. It's a big event in the high school timeline, but it's only as big as you make it, right? I'm sure that if I had gone, I would have had a good time, but I made the decision to keep it low key and make a few more memories with some of the very people I couldn't have survived high school without.
Then again, I probably couldn't have survived high school without my sister either. I still had a good time though..

These Prom pictures and stories have been so much fun! I got to live vicariously through so many Prom stories this week, I'm a feeling a little off without a corsage!

Next Week's Assignment: Pets.
Have a dog? Cat? Hamster? (I think mentioning hamsters is giving my parents awful flashbacks to my childhood pet burrowing behind the bathroom cabinets and my dad spending hours crouched on his knees trying to lure the little furball out with a lettuce leaf and carrot chunk.)
Spin up your pets and tell us why you love them! Was your favorite pet the Golden Retriever you had as a kid who played fetch with you and ate the brocolli you couldn't stomach so you could still eat dessert? Maybe a bird whose chirps brightened your spirits every morning? How about the neighbor's cats who are kept outdoors and therefore think of the driveway across the street as an extension of their home and like to lounge on your car, leaving dirty paw prints, the same car that you may have just washed only to walk out the next morning and find a feline love letter all over your windshield?
Whatever the animal, big or small, four legged or no legged, Spin it up, put it on a leash and walk it on over here! Just don't let them pee on my side bar, that would really piss off my two dogs.
Thanks to Lisa over at Boondock Ramblings for the great idea!
Remember to have your Spin in by May 22!

You look so much like Sprite in that picture!!

You were absolutely right about prom being overrated. I went with a guy that didn't even go to my school and we probably would have been just as happy going to dinner or a movie.
That's cool that you and Lee were in the same grade. My kids will be a year apart in school so hopefully they'll be as close as you guys were. At least Graham will be around to beat up Elliot's suitors. What? I hafta look out for my daughter even if it does occasionally promote violence. Lee looked beautimus, btw.

They have a think here called the adult prom, the radio puts it together and sounds like a lot of fun. I guess since I live in Podunk, IN, they only have those kind of things to look forward to. Besides the racing.
Glad you learned how to tame your hair, just picking. I bet you had more fun then half the prom goers.

I needed permission to post the picture of my sister and her future ex-husband and my date? Oops! Well, my date is now dead, so I guess I can't ask him. And my sister was always taking my stuff without permission, so tough s**t for her, I put it up anyway. And her ex? Well, he's her ex. Who cares? He might actually enjoy reminiscing about when he was slimmer and had hair.

Ah, yet another disappointment. I wanted to see you all dolled up.
What's with the people that didn't want to go to the prom? It would have been *unthinkable* for me and my friends not to go. I had friends who, when they weren't invited, turned around and invited underclassmen or just went together (we had two girls who came together, both dressed in tuxes...yes, I do believe they were making an, ahem, statement).

You didn't go to prom?!
I can't believe it! No long, detailed and hilarious story about prom?!
Well, good, because trust me, you didn't miss much, I'm sure. Like my post said...yaaaawwwn! But I wasn't a "party girl" so maybe if I had been it would have been better. Oh well. The photos of you and your sister were great though and your sister is a hottie. I mean, speaking from a purely objective standpoint. I don't like women that way but...well, you know what I mean!

I so want to spin it. Thanks for reminding me. http://michele-dogslife.blogspot.com/2009/05/prom-1978-style.html

OMG, you were sensible way back when! I should have known, you've always seemed like you have an old soul. :) How cute are you and your sister? Linking you now!

I am soooo not brave enough to post my prom pix! And mine are a tad older... we're talking 80s hair and dresses. Well, my gown was actually not so bad, it's me and my mullet that's the embarrassing issue. Sigh.
Awesome pic of you and your sister!

Oh SK...no prom...no problem! You had fun just the same! You didn't miss much but some cheesey goodness!
I've posted about my experiences at my prom for your reading pleasure! Have a GREAT weekend!

Totally chickened out about showing my prom picture. I have no problem humiliating my dog though...

No prom? I was so looking forward to seeing you in all your fancy-dressed glory.

I think you made a good call to skip the prom. Your sister was adorable though. I think it's great you were able to share so much together growing up. My sister is almost four years younger and for a long time I considered her a nuisance, but she was always my biggest advocate. I can only wish the same for my two girls who currently despise each other with an unmatched fiery passion.

Oh jen, when u put up old pics it just reminds me of how young looking we were back then. I regret just a little too that I didn't go to prom, but i think I had a better time with all of you anyways. Plus, instead of prom I ended up going to GRADnite-which was an ok time(because it was way to crowded there). However the bus ride back made it all worth it :). I can't remeber if u went to GRADnite? I know Brett, Marie, and I was thier, but were u?? Damn brain fart!!!

wow! your sister IS hot!
i played!

Love the retro pictures.. I'm sure she is ecstatic to know you posted there.. j/k! I'm considering digging through pics to find some prom ones, but I'd be late (tomorrow.)
But the pet spin is written FOR me, I will definitely be petspinning next week. (So much blog fodder there.)

I wish I hadn't gone to my prom. It was totally not worth it.

First of all, so weird about next week's spin because I had already started a hamster post. Dead serious.
Also, if my prom had cost $50 bucks I would not have been going either. That's crazy. And I never actually set foot inside the dance my junior year. We took the pictures and then partied. Ah, good times.
Posted by: blissfully caffeinated | May 15, 2009 at 12:24 PM
I never went to prom either. I went to a total of one school dance my entire high school career, and it wasn't that much fun (the church dances, on the other hand, were the place to be - go figure).
Maybe I can get my husband to do next week's spin. He's got lots of good pet stories. I killed a frog once and a couple of goldfish. Nt much to say about that.
Posted by: Arwen | May 15, 2009 at 12:31 PM
I really wanted to participate this week but I couldn't get my hands on any of the fabulous photos. I will be spinning about pets though! Might be about mine or my feelings towards other peoples.
Posted by: Kingsmom | May 15, 2009 at 12:38 PM
You and your sister are both so pretty. And I, too, did not go to prom as it seemed the territory of the cheerleaders and jocks crowd.
Oh my about next week's spin.... How can I post just one story?
Posted by: Pseudo | May 15, 2009 at 12:50 PM
I've loved these prom posts. I went with a guy friend rather than a boyfriend like most people did. I wasn't really into the prom but ended up having fun. I think you can hang out with your girlfriends and still have just as much fun (and then there are no horrifying pictures later either!)

I spun, really, I did. Not in technocolor, but it's up!
