This Blog Giveth So That You May Taketh Away

First of all, a big happy cake day to my older sister, Lee Ann! Lee, since it's your birthday, I decided to give a present... to one of my readers!

This give away is going to be so different, you're going to shake your heads in wonderment. Or confusion. (But as long as your head shake of confusion looks like a head shake of wonderment, I'll allow it.)

One of my frequent commenters, Baba, ( I call her Mom.) (You know, I really should call her now.) (I mean phone her now. Not call her "Now", because I really do call her Mom, you know.) (I think I just took you on a tangent you really didn't want to go on, did you?) (Sorry.) is a quilter, one of the better ones out there. No really! Look it up. (Um, on second thought, don't look it up.)

She has graciously consented to making a quilt for one of my readers! (It only took two days of withholding her granddaughter's kisses and negotiations DID break down at one point, but it worked.) (You're welcome.)

Here it is!

Itn't purty? It's a 56 by 72 inch work of one of a kind wonders, full of spring colors and warm enough to chase even the worst chills away. Mom picked the colors and prints herself, ensuring there is no other quilt like it in the world. She then spent hundreds of hours cutting, sewing, (insert other quilt making verbage here), just so you could have this unique winter warmer.I believe the pattern she used is called "Split Decision" in case some of you closet quilters are wondering. (Then again, why would you want to quilt a closet? Odd..) She calls it an oversize lap quilt, I call it "Mah Give Away!"

So, you, yes, you!, can be a part of this Give Away of Awesomeness, not to be confused with HeatherPride's Mini Van of Awesomeness, and all you have to do is leave me a comment. That's it? That's it! We will pick a winner on February 7 by using a complicated system of finger counts (And if the comment count goes beyond 10, we have toes as a back up.) and then my mom will pick a winner. Or we'll use that random number spitter-outer which tends to keep things fair. Meh, whatever's closest.

The one who wins will get this gorgeous handmade quilt just in time for Spring, although you can definitely cuddle up in this cold weather now. (Unless you live in Florida. Then you just crank your air conditioning on high and PRETEND it's cold outside.) We'll also throw in a box of Shout Color Catcher to keep your quilt looking great after washing. (Which is true. Blue sheds a lot which causes us to throw our quilts into the wash on a regular basis.)

Spin Cycle: The Music in my Mind

My life is one big concert. Depending on the day, a different conductor will lead the orchestra in providing my theme music to guide me through life's daily grind, sometimes lifting me up with a light jazzy melody when my mood is grim, sometimes a bright hot rock beat to stimulate my mood. (I wonder if that would stimulate the economy. Can we try it?)

My father was/is a lover of instrumental pieces. His old 45's and vinyls are still safely stored and his sonar is still active when any child under the age of "Don't touch that!" is within 5 feet of his precious records. One of the radio stations I listen to during the day (when Sprite doesn't have control of my van's sound system) frequently plays one of my dad's favorites, Al Hirt's "Cotton Candy", and I am brought back to my childhood days of listening to the strong brassy sound and being intimidated by such a big noise.

My mother was a big fan of Barbra Streisand and the Bee Gees. The "Guilty" album was usually waiting in their 80's model Grand Marquis and played on the hour long trips to Miami to see the grandparents. Neil Diamond's "Jazz Singer" also made cameo appearances. (Why, yes, I do know most of the words to "Love on the Rocks", why do you ask?) (Is it wrong that I referred to "They're Coming to America" as the Hebrew National Anthem?)

As I grew up, my tastes ran from whatever was current (New Kids on the Block, Debbie Gibson) to what stayed (Bon Jovi) to the newer fresher sounds (Jason Mraz) and even the standards singing hotties (Harry Connick Jr., Michael Buble). I still like to hear the sounds of my youth when I find an 80's station and even lose myself in "In the Mood" by Glen Miller. ("In the Mood" was typically the first song to start an orchestra set on the cruise ships, so that tune brings my sea legs back pretty quickly.)

Even Sprite has developed her own taste in music. And her own recurring tune. (Or stolen mine.)

Last week, as I was dressing her, she began singing. "Doopy doopy doo, doopy doopy doo." My ears picked up on it and I couldn't put my finger on what I was hearing out of her and why it was so familiar, so I sat back and stared at her for a few seconds. Sprite looked at me. "Mommy, you sing. Sing, 'Doopy doopy'."

What? What was she-? Oh... And I began to laugh. I didn't realize the (tuneless) song I had been singing for so long had become so expected to her, that when I didn't automatically begin, she did it for me.

From the time she was able to start rolling over (and away) on the changing table, I needed a way to keep her distracted from the task at hand (escaping) so I could finish mine (changing diaper, changing clothes, removing noxious fumes from our immediate area). So I would "scat", for lack of a better term. Random words, sounds, notes, anything vocal to keep her focused on me while I focused on more important matters. This always worked.

Over time, the "scat" evolved into "doopy doopy doo". Over and over, this became the theme song for our cleaning sessions. I always sang. She always stayed still.

And now here she was, "scatting" right back at me. Since that day of enlightenment, I hear it all the time. "Doopy doopy doo" when she's coloring. "Doopy doopy doo" when she's putting on her shoes (or trying to). She took my little distraction technique and turned it into her daily task anthem.

It could be worse. I could be forced to endure repeated requests of "Once Upon A Dream".... Oh, wait..

"Does this store make me look pregnant?"

I love Ikea. I love everything about Ikea. They can take a 10 x 15 foot space and manage to fit a bed, sofa, dresser, desk, tv unit, every book you've owned since toddler-hood, a kitchen, and a couple of plants and still give you room to spin around in triumph. Just don't bump against that closed cabinet that is shaking in its threat to bust open and spill your nasties all over the floor. In front of company. Mom and Dad specifically. (Boy, wouldn't THAT be embarrassing?)

I love the spins they put on everything. You'll never look at a toilet brush the same way again after seeing their display model, which isn't even called a toilet brush. It's called some fancy name like a lurvenschtock. Don't you want to own a lurvenschtock? For only two bucks? (Did I mention Ikea's prices?) I'm sold!

However, even Ikea has its problem areas. Due to the extraordinary amount of people descending upon the store at any given time, the store is always crowded. Ikea lent a helping hand by painting arrows on the floor to direct the flow of traffic. While this does help in keeping everyone moving more smoothly (and even highlights those yahoos who like to go against the grain and clog the aisles, this makes it much easier and somehow encourages the rule following people to single those rage against the environment types out and give them the evil eye), it is very easy to get caught in the human current and circle the same section a few times before it finally spits you out somewhere near the cafe or the check out area. I ran into this myself while trying to navigate Sprite's stroller and our purchases while John and Sprite took the stairs to the first floor. Finding the elevator was simple. Remembering the elevator was the only way to get the stroller to the first floor without wiping out a few families was the hard part. Once I passed the same kitchen display a few times, I was starting to sweat over the fact that I would never get out of there alive. (But I would be surrounded by pretty things. This thought somehow made death in the textile department seem a little more acceptable.)

I finally entered the elevator and was joined by an older couple. The man came closer and began to make conversation with me. "Oh, what a cute-" he looked over into my stroller, which was full of colorful toddler tableware and completely devoid of a toddler "-where's the baby?"

I smiled at him in lieu of answer. I was already tired from running the second floor track and ready to go. Chit chat (with a dingbat) was not on my to-do list.

He kept talking though. "Did you lose the baby?"

I glanced at his wife who was lowering her head into her left hand as her right hand came up to rest on her husband's arm in silent warning.

He didn't take the hint. "Or is the baby still in your belly?"

I locked eyes with him. "Excuse me?"

He smiled while she cringed. Obviously, she was a veteran at witnessing stupidity. I knew she felt bad for me. I hoped she knew I felt worse for her.

He kept smiling. "Why are you pushing an empty stroller unless the baby is still in your belly?"

My mouth never once quirked in humor. "That's an insult."

He never wavered in his attempt to make me crack a smile. "Well, where's the baby?"

The doors opened and I saw John waiting for me with Sprite in his arms. "With her daddy," I replied as I left him and his comments in the elevator.

"Where have you been? We've been waiting here forever," John complained as I rolled the stroller toward him.

"Do I look pregnant?" I replied.

"What?"

"Do I look pregnant?"

"No."

"Good."

We walked toward check out with our merchandise and a tired Sprite.

"You're only asking if you look pregnant, right?"

"Yes."

"Okay. No."

"Okay."

"But you're NOT pregnant, right?"

"No."

"Good."

I paused in front of a full length mirror near the exit and turned to the side to check out my belly profile, my stop a little too long for John's liking.

"Jen-"

"Not pregnant."

"Good."

Not Whole

I feel it when I'm gripping the steering wheel. I notice it when I'm typing. It's the first thing Sprite goes for when she's playing with my hands. And it's gone.

I've retraced my steps physically, mentally, verbally, ANGRILY, nothing has turned up my wedding ring.

I have only me to blame. John told me to take it off numerous times due to my weight loss. He told me to resize it when I rejected the suggestion of just going sans ring. I cannot blame John for this. I can apologize, but I'm not quite there yet.

This is not the first time I've lost my wedding ring, but it is the same reason. Back in 2005, I lost around 80 pounds and my ring to go with it. We never found it, despite searching throughout the house. Even to this day, I would still surrepticiously watch for a glint here or there when cleaning the house or the car, hoping, even though John replaced it with an even nicer one, it would turn up after an almost four year hiatus. It never has.

And now, the even nicer one has joined the original in that mysterious abyss of reality, the "last place you look", the area "right under your nose" that avoids inspection until all hope has been extinguished and a replacement has been procured.

I can only narrow down the timeframe of its disappearance to between 5PM and 9PM on Thursday. I fidgeted with it during a meeting right before I left work, and then while sitting on my bed, messing with the Spin Cycle during the start of Grey's Anatomy, I ran my right hand over my left and something felt wrong.

I've checked every piece of clothing I went through while folding laundry that night (maybe the ring came off when I was pulling sleeves out of Sprite's shirts), the sweater I had shucked off during the ride to pick Sprite up from daycare (it could be between the driver seat and the console, or maybe in the storage fold of the driver's door, or what about the glove box? I didn't open it today, but stranger things have happened..), I even walked back down to the mailbox checking the driveway, even though I had merely rolled down the window and leaned out from the driver's seat for the parcels upon driving in. Nothing.

I feel undone, vaguely diminished, not whole. I'm missing a piece of me. I'm missing a piece of John. This entire thing is making me restless with the lack of success in my metal mission. My eyes scan everything, everywhere, everyone. Sprite is a prime suspect, but only due to the choking hazard if she were to find it first. I think (hope) she's completely out of the "mouthing" phase by now, but my "what if" is in overdrive.

John has offered (graciously) to replace the ring yet again. I accepted the offer on a contingency basis, that he give me two weeks to find my missing jewelry, and if it doesn't turn up, I want the cheapest 14K gold ring he can find, no stones, no flash or embellishment to fancy it up so I don't feel so God damn guilty when version 3.0 invariably winds up with 1.0 and 2.0, floating just beyond my grasp.

I need to feel better. What have you lost? Or found? Does it still gnaw at you? How long did you search before you found it/ gave up?

I'll start. John gave me a diamond for our engagement, which was nestled in a princess setting so high, it was almost a given that the small  -er  -ish  speck of a  are you sure that's a  I didn't think they could be that tiny diamond would come loose from the claws. I just looked down one day and it was missing. I had no idea when or where I had last noticed it, so my search was meandering and stilted. Finally, one day, about 10 months later, when we were cleaning the apartment we were moving out of, I looked down into the debris I had just swept into a pile and caught a glimmer. Sure enough, it was my diamond. I became convinced that it was fate that let me find it since I was reaching for the vacuum hose to clean up the dust pile when I saw it, and I was sure my vision had gotten much better considering it was a VERY TINY diamond. Which is now sitting in a safety deposit box since I CAN'T BE TRUSTED TO HAVE NICE THINGS!

*sob*

Totally Randomized Tuesday- You know where this is going..

 Tuesdays may get back onto my good side just yet. I'm actually looking forward to them now since The Biggest Loser is having an awesome season, it's not Monday, and I get to unload all the flotsam floating around in my head thanks to Keely's Random Tuesday Thoughts over at The Un Mom. The brain does get cluttered, people.

Whenever I'm about to randomly spew thoughts, I always feel like I need to light the seatbelt sign on this blog, but then I'd actually have to make a seatbelt sign and find a way to upload it onto the sidebar and I'm almost sure pyrotechnics would be involved and that needs a permit, right? Meh. Just hold onto the bars. Oh, wait, I don't have bars on this site either. Crap!

I work on the fourth floor of an office building. The elevators are notorious for malfunctioning or just deciding they would rather deposit you on the second or third floor and force you to take the stairs to actually make it all the way to home base. Today, I walked onto the elevator and pressed "4". The button flashed and then nothing, The door stayed open. I pressed "4" again, same result. Getting irritated, I walked out and into the only other open bay and pressed "1". The doors immediately closed and the elevator brought me down to the lobby. Lesson learned: sometimes, it's not the machinery that's malfunctioning, it's the user.

To the patient in the doctor's office waiting room who coughed on me on Friday: I wasn't recoiling in reaction to the possibility of you spreading germs on me. But I DO hear that Extra Sugarfree gum is having a sale. The Biggest Loser talks about it every week. It must be.

To the nurses at the doctor's office: Please calibrate your scale. If I am only one of 40 people that day telling you the scale seems off by five pounds, I don't think it's due to a collective self esteem boost. We may be right. Check on that, m'kay? And just because you record it on my permanent record doesn't make it fact.

Why is it called "rolling your eyes" when you're really not rolling your eyes? You're actually looking skyward. Maybe we should change the expression to "averting your eyes sarcastically" or "looking upward for an appropriate answer to the dimwad you're talking to" or "shifting ocular gears". Personally, I like the last one.

I'm hosting a give away this weekend. Not really a random thought, more of a shameless plug. You should come back on Saturday. You've never seen a blog give away prize like this before. One of a kind. (Interested yet?)

I've been feeling mentally tongue-tied for the past couple of weeks. I have a lot of ideas sitting in "Draft" which I want to expound on, but every time I look at them, I either don't have the time to work on them or my inspiration is nil. I don't know why this is, maybe it's the fact that I've been trying to finish the last book of the "Twilight" series for over a month now and that keeps getting in the way. I mean, literally getting in the way. Hardcover books are heavy and hurt when carelessly left on the floor forcing you to either step over them or stub your vulnerable toes when trying to find your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night because SOMEONE forgot to leave the closet light on, and won't invest in a nightlight to stop these accidental toe torturing sessions and stop his wife from barking "John!" at 2 in the morning. So, yeah, I really don't know why I haven't been able to finish those drafts..

Last week, Sprite surprised us by saying "holy crap", one of John's favorite sayings. Since everyone was betting she would decide to repeat one of my more colorful rants, NO ONE won that pool. (Even I bet against myself.)

Firehouse Subs makes the best brownies I have ever tasted. Since the baby shower I was attending had Firehouse catered, I was able to confirm this theory. Twice. (It was a cheat day.) (But completely valid as to why my weigh in was a wash this week.)

You know what would make this even more random? If I posted it on Wednesday.

...Shifting ocular gears, I STILL like it!

First the stats: John is up one. He's been a regular at the gym, but hasn't been watching the food so well, so that pound didn't sneak up on him so much as John gave it a welcoming hug.

Me? I'm even. Damn it. Diet the same. Exercise the same. Exercise the...same? That must be it!

I am going to switch up the exercise routine. Yes, 30 Day Shred is now a staple of my week, done every other night. However, I am a Nord devotee. I don't feel like anything is accomplished unless I torture myself at least three times a week on the treadmill.

While I haven't given the Shredder a real chance to prove itself yet, I am changing up the routine on the Nord.

Inspired by my cousin's wife's marathon madness, I wanted to increase my endurance. My current program is 25 minutes walking, 30 minutes jogging, 15 minutes incline, 20 minute cool down. Yup, 90 minutes. I've heard way too many times about my time on the treadmill being too long and it actually loses its effectiveness, blah blah blah, doing more harm than good, yada yada yada, oh well, it's no sweat off my back. (Er, actually... never mind.)

So, I heard that I should try interval training. What this means is five minutes walking, five minutes running. This cuts out the incline, shortens the warm up walk, shortens the cool down, and lengthens the actual running. I will try this for the entire week and report back next Monday on whether or not this is something I can do. Judging by the fact that I am writing this post Sunday night and already feel dread at the prospect of a 45 minute run (segmented, but still 45 minutes.) (Yes it is.) when I usually have to make promises and resort to bribery to make it through the shorter 30 minute runs. (Please don't ask what I promise. It's beyond embarassing and show tunes are usually involved. Not fun.)

There ARE shorter interval programs available, but the ones I saw that had one minute walking, 30 second sprints had me tired already.

In fact, this post has me tired and I'm not even done writing it. Maybe I should try interval writing. Write for 5 minutes, rest for 5 minutes.

In fact, I've been working on this post for nearly 10 minutes (can't you tell?), I owe myself a break.

Rupert: Hm, free food with the diaper?

Bear: The good thing about being pampered is, well,  you get to be pampered.

 

Sprite: Rupert! You went on the carpet! Bad bear! You need a diaper, then you go to time out!

 

Rupert: Dude, what about the food?

 

Rupert: I thought there was a snack involved. What up?

Bear: (snicker) Man,sucks to be you.
