The signs are up all over the office.
"Valentine's Day Potluck!!! .........Mexican Fiesta!"
Uh, I don't get it.
I have been lucky to have received many gifts for Valentine's Day and refried beans were never a part of the ritual (unless we actually went to a Mexican restaurant, but I digress..).
Valentine's Day brings up memories of roses, candy, chocolate, romance, etc. I can't say I actually look forward to it, but I allow myself to be swept up in it when it happens. John is notorious for going above and beyond in showing his affection. One year, he invented Valentine's Week in which every day of the week brought a new delivery from Fed Ex or Amazon.com. He even sent me a fruit arrangement! (Which is so much better than chocolate for any dieter...just Google fruit arrangements) Every day as the week progressed, my co-workers would wait for the delivery to see what Jen's crazy, yet (sigh) romantic, husband had thought of to surprise and woo his wife. The women in the office loved his gestures. The men in the office thought he was crazy and wanted his number to talk some sense into him.
I am embarrassed to say that I have not reciprocated in kind. This year, I am giving John the Juno movie soundtrack. He mentioned he liked it and I thought it would be nice to give him something he wants, not a piece of chocolate in the shape of a keyboard, or a t-shirt which says, "I read your email." (Did I mention I'm married to a geek?)
I tried sending him flowers once. It did not go over so well when the other geeks harassed him about it for weeks. He came home complaining about it and my retort was, "At least YOU'RE getting laid." I don't remember if he actually relayed my comment (probably not).
He promises not to send me flowers this year, because he thinks I expect them now. He won't tell me what he's doing, but since I mentioned the Mexican Fiesta at work, I'm starting to fear I may receive an avocado...
As for the Mexican Pot Luck, I'm bringing cookies from a bakery....a Mexican bakery.
Ole.
